The Balearics has once again broken its population record, with 1,251,086 people living on the islands on 1 July, almost 12,501 more than a year ago, and only 626 of them were Spanish. In other words, 95% of the new residents that the region has gained over the past year are foreigners. The result is that migration from other countries has led to this new increase in residents, one of the largest in Spain, with a 0.42% increase in one quarter, according to data published today by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Mallorca is approaching one million inhabitants, with 971,369, of whom 275,478 were born abroad, 28% of the total. Ibiza is the second most populated island, with 165,289 inhabitants, of whom 57,741 are from another country (35% of the total), and Menorca has 102,880 inhabitants, 21,780 of whom are foreign nationals (21%). The population of Formentera is 11,548, of whom 4,219, or 37%, are foreigners.

The population of the islands is growing thanks to the arrival of citizens from other countries, with a particularly significant increase in Colombians. During the first six months of the year, a total of 3,340 citizens born in Colombia arrived on the islands. They are followed by Argentineans, with 1,930 in six months, and Moroccans, with 1,170 new residents since January.

In terms of emigration, the largest number of departures from the Balearics were Colombians (730), Germans (470) and Italians (420). The Balearics remains the region with the highest percentage of foreign residents: at 29%, the region beats Catalonia (26%), Madrid and the Valencian Community (25%) and the Canary Islands (24%). Over the last decade, the population has grown by 137,539 (12%). Of these, 113,546 are foreigners, which means that 82.5% of the new residents who have moved to the islands in recent years were born in another country.

Human pressure

And one has to also take into account the floating population. On 30 May, the Balearics recorded the presence of 1,816,629 people, representing an increase of 1.27% over the previous year and breaking a new record for human pressure for the fifth month of the year, according to data published by the Balearic Institute of Statistics (Ibestat).

In fact, throughout the month, the figure did not fall below 1,637,427 people on the 6th, and the average stood at 1,702,028 people, 0.88% less than in May 2024. The maximum figure recorded on 30 May represents 1.27% more than the maximum number of people recorded in the same month last year, with 22,831 more people. By island, in May 2025, on the day with the highest number of visitors in Mallorca, 1,360,551 people were recorded; in Menorca, 161,659 people; in Ibiza, 276,185 people; and in Formentera, 22,317 people.
