Professional drivers in Mallorca have warned of growing safety risks on roads through the Serra de Tramuntana as traffic levels surge during the tourist season.
The Balearic Federation of Transport Enterprises (FEBT) said coach operators are increasingly struggling with congestion and dangerous driving conditions on some of the island’s most popular mountain routes, many of which are heavily used by both tourist vehicles and cyclists.
The federation highlighted several “high complexity” areas where problems are most acute, including sa Calobra, Soller, Lluc, Pollensa and Formentor. It said professional drivers had reported manoeuvres and behaviour that disrupt traffic flow and create potentially hazardous situations on narrow and winding roads.
Rafael Roig, president of the FEBT, said the organisation wanted to work alongside authorities to improve safety and traffic management across the Serra. The federation has requested meetings with both the Provincial Traffic Headquarters and the Consell de Mallorca to discuss possible measures, awareness campaigns and stricter compliance with road regulations.
FEBT said its priority was to ensure “safer, more orderly and respectful” coexistence between different road users during the busy summer months, while reducing risks for drivers, cyclists and visitors travelling through the Tramuntana mountains.
