Heavy traffic brought the road to Mallorca’s famous Formentor lighthouse to a standstill yesterday, with long queues of vehicles stretching for miles ahead of seasonal driving restrictions coming into force.

Video shared on social media showed dozens of cars completely stationary along the narrow access road, as drivers waited patiently to reach one of the island’s most popular tourist destinations. The congestion caused significant delays and disruption throughout the area.

The annual gridlock has become a familiar scene in Formentor during the run-up to summer restrictions, with many locals and visitors expressing frustration online over what they describe as a recurring problem with no long-term solution. Others said the scenes were damaging the image of one of Mallorca’s most iconic beauty spots.

From tomorrow, 15 May, until 18 October, private motor vehicles will face restrictions on access to the Formentor peninsula and lighthouse. The measures are designed to reduce pressure on the island’s road network during the busy tourist season.

The restrictions are being introduced by Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) in partnership with the Council of Mallorca, Pollensa Town Hall and the Civil Guard’s traffic division. Officials say the aim is to ease congestion and protect an area regarded as a must-see destination for visitors to the island.
