During Monday's General Policy Debate, the president of the Council of Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, announced that the Council will hand over land for the building of 323 public housing units. "This will be the largest public housing development ever undertaken in Mallorca, and it will be thanks to this Council and no other."
The land is behind the Velòdrom de les Illes Balears (what was Palma Arena) and is by Council of Mallorca offices on C. General Riera.
Galmés added that the transfer to the Balearic Government's Ibavi housing agency could have been made much sooner. In this respect, he was referring to the fact that the previous administration under PSOE had promised to build homes on the site. The project never materialised, though it might be noted it has taken the Partido Popular almost three years in office to now make the announcement.
PSOE had wanted the Council to itself design and build the homes and not just transfer the land to the housing agency. This transfer is free of charge; the value of the land is put at 4.6 million euros. It is said that the homes will be of the VPO protected housing type.
