Llucmajor Town Hall will buy the old Cine Principal in the town's historic centre and convert it into social housing.

A council meeting unanimously approved the proposal to acquire the cinema, which was built in 1938. The proposal came from Més. Political differences were set aside; the spokesperson for Vox congratulated Oriol Gómez of Més.

Gómez said "this building is a place with soul that has been part of the lives of generations of Llucmajor residents". "Developers could build up to 15 high-end luxury homes there. But the town doesn't need more luxury developments that will displace residents from the centre. Bold policies are required that guarantee the right to housing and preserve the identity of the town centre. Allowing the old cinema to fall into the hands of private speculators would be a lost opportunity to reclaim heritage for the community."

It was noted that an estate agency has advertised the property for sale for €799,000, encouraging developers and investors to purchase the building because "it represents a strategic investment with high potential returns".

The councillor for urban planning, Inmaculada Pérez, indicated that some consideration had been given to making the purchase, explaining that she had requested technical reports to begin the purchase process. The mayor, Xisca Lascolas, added: "We hope the technical and legal reports will be favourable."
