Anti-tourism graffiti has appeared in different parts of the Serra de Tramuntana such as Coll den Claret, in the area of Esporles, targeting signs indicating the location of the municipality. ‘For sale Mallorca’ is the message that has been painted on the signs, damaging their image in an area frequented by drivers and residents, but also, at this time of year, by cycle tourists who ride through this mountainous area, although these acts have also been observed in other locations.
On the eve of a new tourist season, this type of action reflects the unease of some citizens about the sale of properties and their mass purchase by people of other nationalities, who are gaining ground in different municipalities and towns in Mallorca, especially in some of the Serra, as is the case of Esporles at this point.
This is not the first time that this type of graffiti has appeared in parts of the Serra or on its roads, such as the one leading to Valldemossa. This trend is particularly noticeable in Palma, where emblematic locations in the city centre, such as La Almudaina, have been the victims of these protest actions.
With the start of the tourist season and the arrival of visitors, these images are sure to spread to various parts of Mallorca, especially those marked in red within this social phenomenon that has led to various demonstrations and protest actions in the form of graffiti, but also rallies and demonstrations in these enclaves or throughout the centre of Palma.
