Mallorca is an example to global tourism, we have been told over and over again, well something serious needs to be done about the airport because first impressions count. I’ve been using Palma airport before the new monstrosity was built and my experience gets worse every time, so who knows what new arrivals must think. Building work has been carried out on the ‘new’ airport pretty much ever since it was opened and on it goes.
On my return from Bilbao in November, I and the group I was with, had never had to walk so far to exit the terminal, and this week, as the construction work continues, it was no better. After a 20-minute hike to escape the airport, there was then a 45-minute wait for the shuttle bus into Palma. I wouldn’t call that shuttle times; then add to that a good 20 minutes to get into the city centre.
So, had I waited and caught the bus, getting from arrival gate to my city centre flat would in total have taken longer than my flight to Madrid. And time wasted negotiating the building work inside, the airport, which is only really busy for three to four months of the year, was a mess. Trying to find the exit and then one where the doors were working was like a game of snakes and ladders. During low season, one terminal would be enough. What an embarrassment for Mallorca.
