Today, Monday, a dozen people admitted in the Provincial Court in Palma to having shipped cocaine and marijuana from Peru to Mallorca hidden in wheelchairs and accepted sentences ranging from one and a half to five years in prison for various drug trafficking offences and membership of a criminal group.
The defendants’ lawyers reached an agreement with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which reduced the sentences initially requested, which amounted to around 100 years in prison in total. Under the agreement, most of those convicted will not go to prison. Two of them, however, will have to pay fines of €215,000 and €126,000 respectively.
The convicted persons have admitted that between April 2023 and July 2024 they were involved in shipping narcotics from different Latin American countries, mainly from the Peru. To do this, they used human couriers, also known as mules, who carried the drugs hidden in the structure of wheelchairs. Once the shipments arrived in Mallorca, they were distributed and sold.
Each of the defendants had a role within the criminal organisation, which was led by a man who, despite having been identified, is currently on the run from the law. Some acted as intermediaries with other traffickers, while others were responsible for transporting and storing the substances.
During the various searches carried out by the National Police at the time of the suspects’ arrest, various quantities of drugs valued at more than £344,000 were seized.
