Last week, National Police officers completed the operational phase of Operation Chanquete in Palma. The operation resulted in 17 arrests on suspicion of drug trafficking and membership of a criminal organisation. In addition, eight searches were carried out, and vehicles (estimated to be worth around €500,000) and various quantities of hashish, marijuana, tusi, cocaine and erectile dysfunction pills were seized.

Agents from Group I of the National Police’s UDYCO Narcotics Unit carried out a laborious investigation over several months into drug trafficking in Palma. They discovered that a considerable number of people were working in a coordinated manner to acquire and sell narcotics on a large scale in Mallorca. After months of investigation, the last suspects were arrested last week. On 16 October, a similar operation was carried out in the shanty town of Son Banya, entering various homes and dismantling points of sale.

During the operations, several kilos of cocaine, hashish, marijuana, 2,200 pills for erectile dysfunction and tusi were seized. Eight top-end cars, valued at €500,000, and €100,000 in cash were also seized.
During the operations, especially in Son Banya, the National Police had the support of Palma Local Police in demolishing the huts that served as points of sale. They also collaborated with their drone unit and provided relevant documentation to the agents of the UDYCO’s Group I Narcotics Unit.

The gang also owned a lorry and a bulldozer, which they used to build sales points and move large amounts of earth in order to modify roads and set up barriers to prevent the police from taking action. This operation has dismantled a well-known criminal organisation that had been selling narcotic substances in the Balearics in recent months.

The police operation involved officers from UDYCO, the Prevention and Reaction Unit (UPR), the Police Intervention Unit (UIP), the Technical Intervention Operational Group (GOIT), Air Resources, Canine Guides, as well as other officers from the Judicial Police Brigade. In addition to these operations and the investigations carried out by the UDYCO, the fight against drug trafficking is being reinforced with actions by the National Police’s public safety units in different neighbourhoods and leisure areas in an effort to combat drug trafficking.
