Palma mayor José Hila has presented the report into local police operations for the period between 23 May and 23 October. Hila said that Palma is a safe tourist destination and that this is due to the local police who he thanked for the professionalism they showed in having made the summer better than ever.
The police operations' scorecard was headed by almost 3,500 interventions against illegal selling - 780 more than last year - which resulted in the confiscation of more than 100,000 articles. Almost 12,000 of these were included in operations involving the criminal police into counterfeiting. The most commonly confiscated items were sunglasses and watches. A value 732,000 euros has been placed on these items.
Criminal proceedings for breaches of industrial and intellectual property were initiated in 181 cases, these having risen by sixty.
There were 929 charges for breaches of the bylaw on street (and beach) drinking, of which 126 were classified as having been serious. The number of charges increased significantly, as there were only 131 last year, representing a rise of some 700%.
Hila, who was accompanied by the councillor for public safety, Angélica Pastor, and the chief of the local police, Josep Palouzié, was able to also announce that the three-shell trick game had been virtually eradicated. There was a major police operation in August against the main criminal game involved with this in Playa de Palma.
The main areas of police deployment were Playa de Palma, the Paseo Marítimo, Cala Major and the old centre of the city.
