Mallorca holiday blues: “If people want to demonstrate about overtourism by telling tourists to go home and squirt people with water then they will kill the golden goose”

So many questions but so few answers as to what is really happening to the tourist industry in Mallorca this year. Everyone admits it’s not hitting the targets but now the official stance is let us wait and see what the numbers are at the end of the season, well it might be a bit late by then for some businesses.

And one worried reader sent the Bulletin this letter: “In late April this year my wife and I who are in our 70’s came to Puerto Pollensa for 10 days holiday. As we have been coming here for a number of years and have become friendly with bar owners, shopkeepers and restaurant owners. We were quite shocked as they were all saying the same thing ‘Where have all the tourists gone?’.

“One shopkeeper told me how much he took for the weeks we were there last year compared to this year and he was 1/3rd down on last year and was concerned if things did not pick up. Reading in the Majorca Bulletin, things have not changed and many a livelihood is at risk. As I understand it hotels have a license so where are all these extra tourists staying if we are talking about over tourism.

“If we have a situation where unlicensed rentals are removed from the open market and put into the tourist market then it is up to the Government to correct the situation. As a Greek hotelier once said to me ‘Some people scrimp and save and for some it may be the only holiday they have that year, its up to me to ensure their stay is perfect and they would wish to come back’.

“If people want to demonstrate about overtourism by telling tourists to go home and squirt people with water then they will kill the golden goose and put more people out of work. With the lack of foresight will they be able to pay a rent if they have no employment.”
