Magellan ship to visit Alcudia

The Nao Victoria was the first ship to make a circumnavigation of the globe. This carrack left Seville in 1519 under the command of the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. He died during what was to be a three-year voyage and was replaced by the Spaniard, Juan Sebastian Elcano. The ship was subsequently used as a merchant vessel and sank with the loss of all on board during a journey from the Antilles to Seville in 1570.

The replica of the Nao Victoria ("nao" means ship) was built in 1991 for the Seville Expo, following a lengthy period of research in order to design the shape of the ship and define its characteristics It is the property of the Nao Victoria Foundation and it will be visiting the port of Alcudia, its only stop in the Balearics, on 30 March. It will stay until 3 April. It will be open to the general public from 10am to 6pm and the price will be three euros for adults and one euro for children aged five to ten.
 
The ship has four decks, captain's cabin and other accommodation. It has the capacity to carry a hundred people on a floor space of 120 square metres. It has three masts, six sails and is 26 metres long and 6.7 metres wide.
