Palma.—The Mayor of Palma, Mateo Isern, is continuing with his drive to increase security in and around the capital this summer season.
Already, the city council has approved the introduction of the Good Citizen Plan which not only includes fining people who stray away from the beach or the sea front in just their shorts or a bikini but also the banning of buckets and glass bottles from the beach and fining cyclists who use the pavement.
And now, the Mayor intends to increase the number of community police on the beat this season by 200.
The Good Citizen Plan has already been introduced in the Playa de Palma but will not be applied across the rest of the municipality until September, once everyone has been informed of the new rules and regulations.
However, in the meantime, as of 30 June, their will be an extra 200 community Local Police officers on hand to help tighten security for residents and holiday makers in Palma.
Palma City Council spokesperson, Julio Martinez, said yesterday that, despite the cost, the council has this summer doubled the number of community police and the hours they will be on the beat.
They will be operational between 7am and 10pm.
"We know that residents have been calling for this kind of action for years, and now we are able to finally meet their needs," he said.
The community police will be spread across all the municipality’s neighbourhoods and the council wants them to be the first port of call for any one in danger or with security concerns.
