Spain's Constitution day is celebrated in the Balearics

PALMA
THE Almudaina Palace close to the Cathedral in Palma was the setting yesterday lunch-time for local government dignitaries' celebration of Spain's Constitution Day, a public holiday across the country. Attendees included Balearic president Francesc Antich; leader of the Council of Majorca, Francina Armengol; speaker of the Balearic Parliament, Maria Antonia Munar, and central government delegate, Ramón Socías. Heads of regional ministries toasted the occasion dating back to 1978 when the first Spanish Constitution following the years of dictatorship was enshrined on 6th December, and when four members of the Balearic parliament of the day sat in the Spanish central government's House of Representatives. Meanwhile, members of the Youth movement of the Opposition Partido Popular in Calle Constitución in Palma were promoting the idea of holding a new referendum on “a Spanish Constitution for the 21st century,” and a Balearic rights group launched a campaign near Plaza Espanya to promote the freedom of the individual to speak the language of his choice.
