Scottish schoolchildren have tour of Palma city hall as part of cultural exchange programme

STUDENTS ARE FROM 5 PRESTIGIOUS CENTRES

A group of Scottish students visited Palma City Hall yesterday, and were received by the Mayor, Catalina Cirer. They were given an insight into the workings of town councils here. The group of some 20 students representing five prestigious education centres, arrived on Majorca on Sunday. A government funded cultural organisation in Scotland had co-ordinated contact with five secondary schools here in the Balearics: Joan Alcover, Medina Mayurqa, Juníper Serra, Berenguer d'Anoia in Inca, and Na Camel.la in Manacor. Last May, a deputy of the Scottish organisation, Christine Pollock, visited Majorca accompanied by five directors in order to set up a pupil exchange programme. The result of their work is the visit of 20 Scottish children to Palma where they were received by the Culture minister of the Balearic government.
Between October 6 and 12 the five heads of the Majorcan schools will travel to Scotland, accompanied by the director of Planning and Innovation, Joana Rosselló, and Margarita Vidal who is the co-ordinator of the project in Majorca. “It's a first point of contact to firm up cultural exchange with the Scottish students. Given the importance of learning English, it's something of real value for our own pupils. The children make friends, they become interested in one another's lifestyles and get to practice the language first hand” said Vidal.
