PALMA
CENTRAL Government is to provide more than 2.5 million euros for the restoration of the Baluard del Princep, part of Palma's old city walls, the Ministry for Public Works confirmed yesterday.
The funding represents 75 percent of the cost of the second and third phases of a programme to restore the historic seafront area which totals just under 3.5 million euros.
Palma's Town Planning Councillor, Yoland Garvi said that the 1'970 metres of the historic wall which overlooks Avenida Gabriel Roca have been earmarked for reformation. Plans are to remove all the vegetation and any other structures currently engulfing the bastion. At a later stage, all the blocks which are badly eroded will either be hand-restored or replaced.
Then the City Council will build 5'335 metres of additional walling and ramps so that people can have access to walk along varying levels of the historic baluard. The project plans include constructing staircase links, flagstoning, the installation of benches and public lighting as well as landscape gardening.
Work will begin this autumn and take approximately 18 months to complete. In fact the total restoration of the Baluard del Princep has five phases which will untimately cost 7 million euros. In the fifth phase, an information and cultural heritage centre is to be built which will provide information on the historic centre of Palma.
