PALMA BACKS ANTI DRINK DRIVE CAMPAIGN

By Humphrey Carter
SCORES of young people took part in Friday night's “Noc Turnos” anti-drink driving campaign along the Paseo Maritimo in Palma.
The initiative, organised by the Spanish Spirits Association, Mapfre insurance company and Palma City Council's Social Services Department offered drivers aged between 18 and 25 the reward of a 20-euro petrol voucher if they stayed off alcohol before driving their friends safely home.

Each participant was issued with a score card by a small army of volunteers involved in the campaign. Every drink of the evening was logged and participants had to pass a breath test every 50 minutes.

Those who passed the final tests at the end of the night were given the fuel voucher as well as a number of other goodies.
Just to drive home the dangers of drinking and driving, two vehicles involved in an accident caused by drinking and driving were exhibited along the Paseo Maritimo.

Apart from encouraging young people not to drink and drive, the zero tolerance campaign, which was first mounted in Palma last summer, has been devised to promote the practice of using a rotating system of designated drivers when young people go out.

The idea is that each week, a different member of the group is elected to stay sober and make sure everyone in the group gets home safe and sound.
Recent studies have shown that more and more youngsters are using the system, and the vast majority consider it a very sensible idea.
There are now plans to try and involve the older generation in a similar scheme.
