Not much energy used by local industry

The energy bill for industry in Spain in 2001 was 6'821 million euros, but the Balearics was the region with the lowest consumption.
This was revealed by the National Institute of Statistics which released the results of a survey on energy consumption for the first time yesterday.
Balearic industry had an energy bill of just over 27 million euros, 43 per cent of which was for electricity.
Oil products accounted for 24 per cent and gas 13 per cent.
Figures for the whole country revealed that 48 per cent depended on electricity, 26 per cent on gas and 19 per cent on oil products.
Heaviest energy consumption was in Catalonia (22.4 per cent), followed by Valencia (13.7 per cent) and the Basque Country (19.6 per cent).
Consumption by Balearic industries accounted for only 0.4 per cent of the total, the lowest figure of all, with La Rioja and the Canary Islands vying for second place with 0.8 per cent. The survey showed that electricity is the chief source of energy in 15 regions and accounts for more than half in eight (Asturias, Cantabria, Catalonia, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja). But in Extremadura, the chief source is oil products which generate 43 per cent of the energy used in industry.
Valencia is the only region in which the chief source of energy is gas, which accounts for 44 per cent, compared to 35 per cent provided by electricity. The Balearics and Navarre use the biggest percentage of coal and by-products (13 and nine per cent respectively).
So far the Balearics have missed out in the liberalisation of energy, which the central government wants to tie in with a cable link.
Liberalisation was introduced on January 1.
However, while industry relies heavily on coal and its by products, domestic consumption of electricity continues to soar, and this winter, record figures of consumption were recorded during the cold spell.
