The weather rather put a damper on a meeting of meteorologists from all over the world in Alcudia yesterday. The heavy downpour in the early hours didn't exactly give them the best image of Majorca but underlined the purpose of their conference, to discover what exactly is happening to the weather in the Mediterranean. The delegates underlined the need for greater research and development into the affects of the unsettled weather which had hit Mediterranean countries over recent years. One of the points which was raised was the need for greater surveillance into climate change. The Palma Met office has said that one of the most likely causes of the unsettled weather in Majorca this summer was global warming. And what is more the Met Office maintains that we start getting used to wet weather during the summer months. Small quantities of rain fell across the island yesterday and more is forecast for today. The only good point about the rains last summer is that Majorca has an ample supply of water and reservoirs are nearly at bursting point. The meteorologists meeting in Alcudia underlined the fact that most of the world was experiencing climate change at the moment and more needed to be done to establish the exact reasons. The local ministry for the environment has ordered an investigation into climate change in the Balearics to establish its affects and what can be done to counter it.
