Not a peseta of the tourist tax has been collected yet, the tax is not due to come into force until later this year, but the Balearic government has already decided how to spend 87'000 million pesetas of the funds which will be raised. Yesterday the Balearic Ministry for Tourism unveiled the multi-million peseta investment programme which will be the first phase of tourist tax money being used to fund the renovation of green belt areas and tourist resorts across the Balearics. The urban heart of Ibiza town is to be renovated as will be the Port of Soller. Millions of pesetas are to ploughed into Soller where the la Mola tunnel is to be built and the sea front to be completely pedestrianised with new car parks and sports facilities installed. A number of abandoned hotels in the Santa Caterina area of the Port of Soller are also to be demolished. The project also extends to the north east of Majorca where a new road ring road is to be built around the Bay of Alcudia, taking traffic out of the resorts. The road along the Playa de Muro, from Alcudia to Can Picafort, is to be improved and a new network of bicycle lanes is to be built around Lake Esperanza to the back of Alcudia. In total 2.612 million pesetas are to be spent on the Playa de Muro project. 18.004 million is to be invested on green belt and tourist resorts in Minorca and just under four million is to be spent on remodelling the Manacor rural and agro-tourism industry.
