Palma is the fifth dirtiest city in Spain according to the results of a survey carried out by the OCU Consumers Organisation. The OCU consumer survey involved canvassing residents in each of Spain's 64 largest cities and the majority of people living in Palma believe that the standard of street cleaning in the capital has deteriorated since the last survey was carried out in 1995. In total 5'151 people were questioned and only 36 percent said they were satisfied with the cleanliness of their city. With regards to Palma, the majority of residents feel that the cleanliness of the capital's streets and parks is well below average The two biggest concerns of Palma residents are dog excrement, despite the city council's concerted efforts to make city pet owners more responsible and clean up after their pet, and rubbish. Graffiti is also high on the list of concerns. But, despite the general feeling of city folk that the city is dirty, many believe that since 1995, conditions have improved - but obviously the city council has a long way to go in its bid to clean up the capital and please the population. Over the past two years, one of the biggest complaints has been about the extensive road works and construction being carried out across the city which has not helped the city's image with piles of mud, rubble and building materials dotted across the capital. Cartagena, Alicante, Teruel and Almería are the cities residents claim are dirtier than Palma while the Madrid city council appears to have mounted the most successful clean up operation.
