A report in a German newspaper yesterday which suggested that holidaymakers would only be able to shower at given times of the day in the Balearics, because of the water crisis, was dismissed yesterday by the Balearic Government. But the report in the tablod Bild could be a taste of what is to come for the local authorities as they battle to convince tour firms that there is enough water and at the same time lobby the central administration in Madrid to pay for the enlargement of the water desalination plant in Palma. Opposition groups say that it must be enlarged to guarantee an adequate supply of water. Balearic Minister for the Environment, Margarita Rossello, admitted this week that Majorca is facing a severe water crisis but Balearic leader, Francesc Antich, has promised tour operators in Britain and Germany that the islands will have sufficient water for this summer.
