I know that the British love the Balearics but it shouldn´t mean that Britain is quietly forgotten when it comes to tourism promotion campaigns. The local ministry for tourism gave details yesterday of how they will be spending their 2.7 million euro promotion budget next year, There will be 29 promotion events in Germany, 10 in Spain (mainland), 10 in Russia and Scandinavia and just eight in Britain. So Britain is in fourth place despite the fact that four million British tourists come to the Balearics every year and they are the biggest spenders. Now obviously Germany is the principal market for the Balearics but Britain is a close second. You must also take into account that the Balearics is facing stiff competition from other resorts which are cheaper. British tourists are loyal and love the Balearics but they can´t be taken for granted. Basically, the Balearic government will be spending their promotion budget on attending the various tourism fairs across Europe. There is no money for TV advertising campaigns and no money to help businesses who stay open during the Winter months. For islands which survive thanks to tourism, 2.7 million is a very meagre sum. Also, as I wrote last week the tourism department has a budget of 74 million euros but just 2.7 million for promotion! Amazing. I think someone at the local ministry for tourism is getting their figures wrong. More money has to be found for promotion and ofcourse the British market.
