Go easy on Son Espases

by Humphrey Carter

It is the easy option and has been for decades to criticise the National Health service in the UK and it is pretty much the same here in Spain. However, for various reasons, over the past few months I have had, and am having, the “Son Espases experience.” Granted, it may have a few nonstructural problems, but the hospital is gigantic. It is more like four hospitals in one and, under the burden of the current cut backs, the mammoth centre appears to work extremely well.

And, I am not alone in that opinion. In the wings and wards there are notice boards and all of the ones I have had a read of, are full of cards of all shapes and sizes in various different languages, thanking the hospital staff for having done a wonderful job.

Obviously, hospitals are not designed to be fun places to be, but bearing in mind the challenges the staff at Son Espases are facing as the Prime Minister and the Balearic government quite literally take the knife to the regional and national health services, I have seen very few glum faces over the past four days as the staff, under immense pressure, go about their work 24 hours a day.

Granted, the monstrous hospital had its teething problems when it opened last year, but Palma airport, which is now over a decade old, still leaks, is anyone complaining? No.

So, give Son Espases a break - one day you might need it and you will be grateful that Majorca has such a new and well equipped hospital.
