There is an earlier start to the traffic restrictions in Formentor this year. It has been brought forward by two weeks from June 1 to May 15, this coming Friday; the restrictions will last until October 18.
The road from Puerto Pollensa to the lighthouse in Formentor gets terribly congested. This was why the restrictions were brought in some years ago. The period for the restrictions and the daily hours have gradually been extended since the scheme started. Unauthorised private vehicles are prohibited from using the road between the Formentor beach and the lighthouse from 10am to 10pm.
There is barrier-controlled access in Puerto Pollensa but only as far as the beach and only if there are spaces available at the car park by the beach. There is a bus service, 334, which goes all the way to the lighthouse. Cyclists are among those who are exempt from the restrictions.
The final decision regarding the restrictions lies with the traffic directorate. There are consultations with the Guardia Civil, the Council of Mallorca (whose road it is) and Pollensa Town Hall. The town hall has been pressing for an even earlier start to the restrictions. It wants them in place from April.
The total eclipse of the sun on August 12 may mean some modifications to the restrictions. Formentor is among the places in Mallorca that will offer the best observation opportunity.
