Fitz nightclub is set to take over the venue formerly known as Lío, housed within the old Tito’s building on Palma’s Paseo Marítimo, with plans to open by mid-July. The development, confirmed ahead of Easter but not publicly disclosed until now, had been the subject of speculation for several weeks.
Speaking to Ultima Hora, Alberto Hidalgo, chief executive of Grupo Sounds, said discussions with construction firms are ongoing, with greater clarity expected within a fortnight. “We would like to open this season,” he said. “There is no fixed date yet, but the project is firmly centred on quality for the local community. It is vital not to overlook year-round residents, who need a viable leisure option throughout the year, as well as visitors to Mallorca seeking a high-quality experience.”
Grupo Sounds already operates Fitz venues in Madrid and Marbella, alongside other establishments including Dos Passos, Bonded and Vandido. The new Fitz Mallorca will occupy the former Lío Mallorca space, which closed last year and announced redundancies earlier this year. The historic nightclub has a capacity of more than 700 people. Nearby, the Social Club has already launched its summer programme.
Hidalgo expressed confidence in both the group’s expansion and Mallorca’s evolving hospitality sector. “We are very encouraged by the strong growth taking place, with leading hotel chains arriving,” he said. “There is a clear demand for a high-quality leisure offering that reflects the island and its residents. We are building strong partnerships with restaurants, hotels and even other clubs. Healthy, fair competition benefits everyone and enhances the reputation of an island such as Mallorca.”
He added that part of the aim is to help revitalise the Paseo Maritimo, which has faced challenges in recent years due to the pandemic and ongoing refurbishment works that have reduced parking capacity significantly.
“Mallorca is not seeking to replicate Ibiza, but to preserve its own identity in a sustainable way,” he said. “That means quality daytime offerings — good hotels and restaurants — complemented by a strong entertainment scene. If international artists aligned with the Fitz brand perform here, that brings added value to the island.”
Addressing the significance of the venue, Hidalgo noted its place in Spain’s nightlife history. “Our focus is on adapting the space so that local people feel it is theirs,” he said. “This is an iconic building for Mallorca and for Spain — a former meeting point for celebrities. The goal is to restore its standing along the Paseo Marítimo, so it is once again a source of pride for residents, rather than being associated with past problems.”
He added that the group has received a positive initial response and is committed to integrating into the local community, creating jobs and presenting a constructive image. “This is a long-term project,” he said.
