Més in Campanet have raised a council motion calling on the Balearic Government and Council of Mallorca to acquire the Gabellí Gran estate, the historic property in Campanet which is for sale at €16 million.
The party, whose Guillem Rosselló is mayor of Campanet, argue that the purchase would ensure the protection of the area. The property is close to the Fonts Ufanes springs, a protected natural monument, and Més favour it being for public uses. An interpretation centre for the springs, a hostel within the public network, or a refuge integrated into local cycling and hiking routes are among the suggestions.
Gabellí Gran has an Irish owner, whose intention over several years had been to convert the property into a hotel. He finally lost interest in the project because of increased costs and the bureaucracy. A licence for a hotel is extant.
Més colleagues in Llucmajor recently gained unanimous town hall approval for the purchase of the old cinema in order to create public housing and prevent the cinema being converted into luxury apartments. But the price was way lower - just under 800,000 euros - and the purchase won't involve other institutions.
