Sant Antoni Eve is a standout day in the Manacor calendar. The fiestas are marked by the dances of the demons and the saint and by the riotous singing of the 'goigs' of Sant Antoni in the Nostra Senyora dels Dolors Church.
The goigs took place, but the whole fiestas were overshadowed by the death on Thursday of 18-year-old Miguel Ángel Florez. A saxophonist with the Manacor Band of Music, he would have been playing on Friday. The band was instead silent.
For the first dance of the demons, normally a great occasion, there was total silence. The demons and the saint stood still. Rather than celebrating, Manacor was in mourning.
A neighbour, Nico, is a member of the band. He said on Friday: "We all have to carry on ... for Miguel Ángel." He was aware of talk of the fiestas being called off completely. "There is no right decision."
Miguel Ángel's younger brother, who was injured when the roof collapsed at the family house on C. Sant Francesc on Thursday morning, has been discharged from hospital. The family have been provided with accommodation by the town hall. The property has been cordoned off, and people in the neighbouring houses have been moved out temporarily while investigations are carried out.
The chief of the Mallorca Fire Brigade, Xisco Bonnin, said on Thursday that indications were that the collapse was caused by the age and poor condition of the beams.
It has emerged that the house, because of its age, should have been subject to a mandatory building inspection. The town hall's planning department says there has been no application for this and nor is there any documentation related to the state of the property's preservation.
