An 18-year-old died on Thursday morning after the roof of his family home in Manacor collapsed. He was asleep in a room on the top floor. His 12-year-old brother, who was in another room, was seriously injured and has been rushed to Son Espases Hospital.

The incident occurred around quarter past five at a house on C. Sant Francesc in the centre of Manacor. Fire and rescue, police and ambulances all went to the scene, as did the mayor of Manacor, Miquel Oliver. Medics could do nothing more than confirm the death of the 18-year-old.

The parents were also asleep at the time. They are understood to be uninjured but are obviously in shock.

Reports suggest that a second part of the roof collapsed around an hour after the initial incident.

The 18-year-old has been named as Miguel Ángel Florez. He was a saxophonist with the Manacor Band of Music. Its assistant director has expressed his shock at the tragic news. "From the Band of Music, we want to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends. As best we can… we will continue playing as a band."

The Sant Antoni Fiestas in Manacor have been altered as a mark of respect. The first two dances of the demons have been cancelled, and during the traditional cavalcade from the town hall to the parish church, the band of music will not play any pieces, only a drum roll.
