A 72-year-old Spanish man has been arrested by the Guardia Civil after keeping €3,500 he found in a wallet at Son Sant Joan Airport. The arrested man admitted to the officers that he had thrown the wallet into the toilet and kept the money.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon. Officers from the Fiscal and Border Service were called to one of the checkpoints at Palma airport after a passenger reported that he had lost his wallet. The Guardia Civil officers who attended the scene interviewed the victim, who explained that he had lost his wallet containing €3,500. The officers viewed the security camera footage from the airport and saw that the man had dropped his wallet as he passed through the security arch.

A man in his seventies picked up the wallet and kept it. Investigators located the suspect while he was waiting to board a flight to the mainland and asked him about the wallet. The man admitted that he had found it on the floor and, once he had emptied it, he threw it away in a bin in one of the toilets and handed over €1,500 to the officers.

The Guardia Civil officers went to look for the wallet and found that it was empty, so they asked the man if he had any more money and he handed over €500 that he had in one of the pockets of his jacket. The figures did not add up, so the officers decided to conduct a search and found the rest of the money in another pocket and in his wallet.
