It could be last orders for smoking on bar and restaurant terraces in Spain as the Spanish government has approved a bill which outlaws tobacco in many new areas. It could be the end of the line for many smokers.
Until now bar and restaurant terraces had been a "haven" for smokers after it was banned in the interior some years ago. All this look set to change and the government look set to close the final loophole. The announcement comes as the government has increased the price of many popular cigarette brands by 25 cents a packet. The new prices come into force over the weekend with popular makes now costing 6.25 euros.
Smoking will also be prohibited in public swimming pools, bus shelters, stations, playgrounds and even university campuses. There will be a 15-metre zone around hospitals, schools and social centres where smoking will also be prohibited. Concerts, outdoor shows and popular festivals are also added to the list of smoke-free spaces.
Not only are smoke-free areas being expanded, but penalties are also being tightened. Fines could reach €600,000 in the most serious cases. And it is not only smokers who will be penalised, but also those who fail to enforce the rule.
Bars, for example, will have to display signs clearly informing customers of the ban. This will not be a decision left to the owner. It will be mandatory, and if they fail to comply, they will also be subject to penalties, although the amount of these penalties is not yet known.
