The Balearic president, Marga Prohens, received the Sustainable Tourism Award on Wednesday, presented by Cambio 16, at a ceremony held in Madrid. The regional leader attended the event accompanied by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Jaume Bauzà, and the editor of Cambio 16, Jorge Neri. “The time to stop, transform and lead 21st-century tourism from the Balearics is now. It is time to talk about limits and sustainability. Not as a slogan, but as the only way to guarantee the future of tourism.’ she wrote on her social media account to express her gratitude for the award.

Prohens pointed out that, although the tourism industry ’has been questioned many times‘, the region claims to be ’a proudly tourist-friendly land. We are proud to have a whole generation of businesspeople and entrepreneurs who decided that this sector would be a pioneer, who placed our islands at the forefront of global tourism, and who continue to work for them,’ she said.

In a ‘process of change’ such as the current one, she claimed, the government has assumed its responsibility through the Pact for Sustainability. ‘We have a lot at stake, we must make decisions based on reliable information, transforming our model of success,’ she said. ‘Because tourism has never been the problem; once again, it is the solution. Thank you, Cambio 16, for this recognition, with which I commit myself to being an ambassador for a new economy based on value, return and the well-being of residents,’ she concluded.
