Graffiti found a few days ago in the Fonts Ufanes area of Campanet was that of the logo of Núcleo Nacional, a far-right neo-Nazi group. The NN also stands for Noviembre Nacional, a reference to when this group emerged. This was in November 2023 when there were protests by the national headquarters of the PSOE party. The protests had to do with the amnesty for Catalan pro-independence leaders.
NN made a brief appearance months ago at a protest in Palma, the graffiti in Campanet having now raised concerns about its activity in Mallorca.
But are there really grounds for concern? Nationwide, numbers are estimated to only be around 1500, but the state security forces - Guardia Civil and National Police - are coordinating intelligence about the group in Mallorca. It is believed to have some support in the island's rural areas. The very limited membership in Mallorca is said to include, surprisingly perhaps, people of 'xueta' Jewish origin.
Its funding relies on membership fees, online sales, and donations. The ideology is based on hatred of immigrants, the LGBTQ community, Jews, as well as Pedro Sánchez and the current government. It disseminates Falangist, Francoist and Nazi beliefs.
The group is reckoned to have political aspirations. There have been calls for NN to be banned and dissolved.
