The Balearic government is not drafting, nor is it considering drafting, a law to restrict vehicle access to the Balearics, but it will respect the regulations introduced by the island councils. This was stated on Tuesday in the plenary session of the Parliament by the president of the Balearics, Marga Prohens, when asked about the matter by far right Vox spokesperson Manuela Cañadas.

‘The Government is not drafting or considering introducing any law. The councils are implementing their measures to ease traffic congestion and their load studies to establish, using objective criteria, the number of vehicles that can circulate on the islands,’ said the president.

The only thing the government will do, Prohens stressed, is ‘be respectful of the decisions taken by each council’. It should be remembered that Ibiza and Formentera have already implemented the regulation and Mallorca and Menorca are working on it. Cañadas criticised the government for trying to justify these regulations on the grounds of combating saturation and protecting the region.

‘We are concerned that behind another flagship project of the PP there is only improvisation and the eternal obsession with prohibiting and restricting instead of managing and solving problems,’ she stressed. In her opinion, this type of restriction will not have the desired effect because ‘most of the cars belong to residents and not to car rental companies.’

‘The excuse of environmentalism hides poor infrastructure management and the lack of adequate public transport to meet demand,’ insisted the Vox spokesperson. Prohens, in addition to reiterating that legislation in this regard is not on the government’s agenda, highlighted the progress made during her term of office in public transport, railway projects and roads.
