A kamikaze driver caused panic early on Monday morning on the Palma airport motorway. A taxi driver recorded the white vehicle driving in the wrong direction 500 metres from the Coll d'en Rabassa exit. ‘The taxi that was recording and the car in front of it had a miraculous escape,’ explained one of the drivers who saw it.
The incident took place at around 4 a.m., according to the video recorded by a taxi driver who crossed paths with the kamikaze driver at high speed. The images, accessed by the Bulletin sister paper Última Hora, show the car driving in the wrong direction and forcing several drivers to take evasive action to avoid a collision.
The Traffic Guardia Civil has taken charge of the investigation and is trying to locate the driver, who could face charges of a crime against road safety. ‘The curve is to the right, if it were to the left they wouldn't see him coming, it was lucky,’ said one of the drivers who saw what happened.
A 24-year-old Spanish man is also being investigated by the Local Police for driving at 104 kilometres per hour on a section of Camí del Reis, in Palma, which has a speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour. Initially, the owner of the vehicle was summoned, but it turned out that it was being driven by a friend of his son.
The events date back to the afternoon of 19 October. The officers set up a speed trap in response to recent complaints from local residents about speeding by many drivers. The police detected the offence and summoned the owner of the vehicle. However, he stated that he was not driving it, but his son was. When the officers showed him the photo from the speed camera, he realised that his son was in the passenger seat, but he did not know who was driving his vehicle.
A few days later, the driver voluntarily appeared at the police station and admitted that he was the one driving the vehicle at a speed three times the speed limit. For all these reasons, he was informed that he was under investigation but not under arrest.
