Spain's Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is implementing a major change in road emergency signalling. Starting 1st January 2026, drivers must replace traditional warning triangles with a new connected luminous device known as the V16 beacon. This regulation aims to enhance road safety and reduce the risk of accidents during breakdowns or emergencies.

The DGT has confirmed that all cars, buses, adaptable mixed vehicles, goods transport vehicles and non-special vehicle combinations registered in Spain must carry this device. However, motorcycles and special vehicles, such as agricultural or construction machinery, are exempt from this requirement.

The regulation also stipulates that vehicles travelling outside Spain, within countries adhering to European traffic conventions, may carry this beacon to ensure standardised and safe signalling across the continent.

Technical specifications and operation

The V16 beacon features a compact design with powerful luminosity. It emits intermittent yellow light visible at 360 degrees and can be spotted from over a kilometre away in suitable conditions. The device attaches magnetically to the vehicle's roof or any metallic surface and connects automatically to the DGT 3.0 platform, transmitting real-time location data to Traffic Management Centres via built-in GPS and SIM technology.

Emergency protocol and usage guidelines

The DGT has established specific protocols for beacon usage during emergencies. If possible, drivers should safely move their vehicle to the right-hand shoulder. The V16 beacon should ideally be placed on the roof without exiting the vehicle, minimising the risk of accidents. The device must maintain minimum 30-minute autonomy, 18-month battery life, and guaranteed 12-year connectivity without additional costs.

In adverse weather conditions, occupants are advised to remain inside the vehicle with seatbelts fastened until help arrives. The beacon must be positioned at the highest possible point for maximum visibility, or alternatively on the driver's side if roof placement isn't feasible.
