Balearic Government told to prioritise the Manacor-Arta railway

The government has "relegated" this project

The main opposition party in the Balearics, PSOE, is calling on President Marga Prohens to reconsider priorities for rail projects in Mallorca. PSOE are specifically wanting her to prioritise the Llevant line (Manacor to Arta).

The government has said that this is less of a priority than the Sa Pobla-Alcudia extension, which has a scheduled completion date of 2031, and the Palma to Llucmajor and Campos line (2032). But far from "relegating it", PSOE argue it should be top of the list. There is an existing infrastructure, whereas there isn't for either of the other two projects.

PSOE point to the "total rejection" of the Sa Pobla project among the people of the municipality and note that the Campos railway will run to the president's hometown. For this, they say, there isn't a proper project or route or social consensus. By contrast, there is consensus in favour of the Llevant line.

When PSOE were in power, construction work was ready to go, with thirty million euros of tourist tax revenue earmarked for the Manacor to Arta project.

In Sa Pobla, meanwhile, the government has returned to the idea of the tracks to Alcudia going underground. But rather than just for some of the Sa Pobla stretch, it would be the whole stretch. This would prevent any impact on farmland and heritage features.
