The president of the Balearic government, Marga Prohens, has announced plans to extend Palma’s metro service to Son Espases. She revealed the proposal on Wednesday while responding to opposition parties during the General Policy Debate in the Balearic Parliament. According to Prohens, the government is already working with Palma City Council on the technical preparations, with construction expected to begin in the “coming months.”
The extension would run from the Parc Bit station, which only opened this summer and was inaugurated by Prohens herself. The project, however, was originally proposed under the Armengol administration, which also planned to link the network to Son Espases Hospital.
In 2020, the Pact coalition announced a tram line, a plan that Prohens dismissed on Wednesday, saying: “That tram was never heard of again.” In reality, discussions about extending the metro to the hospital have been ongoing since at least 2010.
The project is expected to be complex and costly. The recent extension from the UIB to Parc Bit required an investment of nearly 29 million euros, funded largely by European Next Generation funds, with an additional 9 million euros provided under the insularity factor.
Prohens also confirmed that the Llucmajor train project has been put on public display and “is proceeding according to schedule.”
