Rafel Roig, president of the Balearic Transport Federation, says that twenty shuttle buses, each with 55 seats, are being made available to the military personnel arriving in Palma on the USS Gerald R. Ford on Friday.
From 10.30am on Friday, destinations for the coaches will include shopping centres and Magaluf. Roig adds that there will be other coaches for various excursions. The number isn't known, as these excursions tend to be arranged at short notice - on the day of the excursion.
Whatever the total number, it is clear that Mallorca's coach operators are to the fore in deriving a financial benefit from the aircraft carrier's visit.
Roig hasn't put a figure on this, but the president of Afedeco small retailers association, Joana Manresa, has - approximately two million euros. "We greatly value the stopover of the US aircraft carrier in Mallorca, as it represents a unique opportunity to boost local retail."
In the port, there will be food trucks. As an alternative, the marines might consider an excursion to the Son Fusteret Showground in Palma, where the Burger Fest is taking place until Sunday.
