More than 4,500 sailors aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford could spend close to ten million euros in Mallorca during their six-day visit. The world’s largest aircraft carrier is scheduled to anchor in Palma Bay from 3 to 8 October, and US officials are already in Palma preparing for the arrival, with coaches arranged to transport personnel from the port and the National Police and Guardia Civil informed for security.
Based on previous visits by similar aircraft carriers, such as the USS Harry S. Truman, each crew member is expected to spend between 200 and 400 euros per day. Their spending will cover excursions, sports and clothing purchases, hotels, taxis, coaches and car hire.
During the Truman’s 2022 visit, military personnel stayed in Palmanova and Magalluf, as well as hotels across all major tourist areas, mostly in four and five-star establishments. Predictions suggest that a similar pattern is likely for the upcoming visit.
To facilitate transport, 30 coaches were hired daily to take the sailors on guided tours to Deya, Valldemossa, Soller and Puerto Andratx, or to destinations for hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana and cycling in the northern part of the island.
According to Pimeco, Afedeco and major retailers, the sailors usually buy sportswear, fashion accessories, and high-end tech products. Luxury fashion boutiques in the Old Town are expected to see record sales, as officers take advantage of the visit to purchase premium gifts before returning to the United States.
