The tourism statistics for August, released on Thursday, indicate that Mallorca experienced a 2.7% year-on-year increase in the number of tourists. This was above a 1.8% rise for the Balearics as a whole. In Ibiza/Formentera there was a slight decrease.

In all, Mallorca received 2,057,142 tourists in August - there were 3,095,772 for the Balearics as a whole. Spanish tourism in Mallorca fell by 2.5%, while foreign tourism went up 3.5%. Of the two main foreign markets, the UK registered a small increase (0.7%) to 373,250. German tourism continued a trend that started in May, one of decline. The August decrease was four per cent, but the German market remained the largest market by some distance - 583,107 tourists.

German tourism is very limited on the other islands. There were 636,263 German tourists for the whole of the Balearics, down 4.2%, while the UK total was 587,995, a fall of 0.6%.

The most significant increases in Mallorca, in percentage terms, were for the Italian and Benelux markets. The actual numbers of tourists are way lower than those for the UK, Germany and Spain.

In May and July, there were slight decreases in the total numbers of tourists in Mallorca. But the figures for June and August suggest summer tourism is holding up, despite all the talk about the impact of prices. Industry sources have been dismissing any negative impact as a consequence of protests. Instead, they have been highlighting factors such as the German economy and German tourist price sensitivity.
