Heavy rain sweeping across Ibiza has caused major leaks throughout much of the airport terminal. The rainfall gauge at Ibiza Airport had already recorded more than 100 litres per square metre – 104.5 l/m² – before noon.
The security checkpoint, located just before the departure area, has been particularly affected. Persistent and heavy water ingress has completely flooded parts of the zone, causing considerable disruption.
AENA explained that “due to the widespread torrential rain, a large volume of water fell in a short period of time, overwhelming the drainage systems.” They added that “work is currently underway in the affected areas.”
Despite the problems at security, AENA confirmed that airport operations have largely continued as normal. Passengers were able to move through the terminal, albeit in a disrupted environment.
However, in the early hours of the morning, when the rainfall was at its heaviest, some flights scheduled to land in Ibiza had to be diverted to alternative airports.
