Heavy rain in Ibiza on Tuesday left two people seriously injured and three others with minor injuries after a morning of severe weather triggered by a red alert from Spain’s state meteorological agency, Aemet. According to Ibiza town council, the most serious incident involved an elderly person who fell into a drain while trying to cross the road. Mayor Rafael Triguero said no further serious injuries had been reported despite widespread disruption.

In the Puig des Molins area, part of a hillside gave way, sending rocks crashing into two nearby hotels. Guests described moments of panic as firefighters rescued three people who had suffered minor injuries after becoming trapped on upper floors. Around 220 tourists were evacuated and will be rehoused in hotels in Platja d’en Bossa.

Local police, the national police, firefighters and emergency medical services were deployed to the scene. Authorities also reinforced security with an additional 50 police officers, 22 of them drafted in on an emergency basis. Residents were urged to avoid unnecessary travel.

By midday, Ibiza officials had met with Civil Protection, police forces and the Balearic emergency director, Pablo Gárriz. The Cecopi emergency coordination centre was activated and initial response protocols put in place.

Emergency services reported around 30 interventions during the storm, while the 112 helpline handled 78 weather-related incidents. A private nursery school had to be evacuated due to flooding, and as a precaution pupils across the island were kept in classrooms until 2.30pm, when staggered dismissals began.

Social services were also activated to support homeless people and others affected by the weather. Exhibition grounds have been made available for reinforcements from Spain’s Military Emergencies Unit (UME), which will assess material damage on arrival. All municipal facilities will remain closed and planned events have been cancelled. The mayor urged residents to stay at home, remain calm and follow updates through official channels.
