"Bold measures" needed for Balearic tourism containment in light of another "record year"

On Monday there was a series of meetings between parties' parliamentary spokespeople and President Prohens. These were ahead of the Balearic Parliament resuming its sessions after the summer break.

Iago Negueruela, the spokesperson for the main opposition party PSOE and a former tourism minister, called on the president to adopt "bold measures" to curb tourist overcrowding in light of what has been another "record" summer, with more tourists than ever arriving at the islands' airports.

According to Negueruela, Prohens replied that they must first wait and see how the season ends, bearing in mind that some business leaders have pointed to a downturn in spending.

"There is no longer the courage she once boasted about, and we are starting this parliamentary term with a government that doesn't want to do anything."

He flatly ruled out the possibility of PSOE returning to the sustainability pact (for the future tourism and economic model) and set as a condition that Prohens "backtracks" on planning and tourism measures she has approved. "If she doesn't want to implement containment measures because she has agreed not to with the far right, then let her say so. The president is once again embracing Vox's strategy."

* In terms of total tourist numbers, there has been a monthly increase for the Balearics each month this year with the exception of May. (Figures up to July.)
