Mallorca maps 19 key spots for Total Solar Eclipse crowds and traffic

Some roads may need to be closed to prevent bottlenecks on the day of the eclipse

The Fundació Institut d’Astronomia i Astronàutica de Mallorca (FIAAM) has published a map pinpointing 19 potential trouble spots on Mallorca where significant crowding and road congestion could occur during the anticipated total solar eclipse on 12 August. The Subaru event, attracting both locals and visitors, will be visible in full at selected locations, fuelling expectations of high visitor numbers to optimal observation points.

The FIAAM report categorises these 19 critical points into three primary groups: coastal areas, major road routes, and interior mountain sites. Some locations belong to more than one category due to their geographic characteristics and accessibility. The foundation's analysis particularly notes areas where the eclipse will be visible at 100%, as these are expected to see the highest influx of eclipse watchers.

Coastal and Mountain Hotspots

Among the coastal hotspots, the Serra de Tramuntana stands out — specifically between La Trapa and Formentor — as well as sites such as Torre des Verger (Banyalbufar), Port de Valldemossa, sa Foradada (Deya), Puerto Soller, and sa Calobra (Escorca). Other recommended coastal vantage points include Mola d’Andratx, El Toro, Las Malgrats (Calvia), Cap Blanc (Llucmajor), and Cap Salines (ses Salines). Notably, Palma offers an 85% eclipse view but doesn't feature as a prime 100% observation location.

Mountainous sites within Mallorca's interior, including Puig de Santa Magdalena (Inca), Puig de Bonany (Petra), Puig de Sant Miquel (Montuïri), Puig de Randa (Algaida), and Puig de Sant Salvador (Felanitx), are also identified as areas likely to draw large crowds, despite offering only partial eclipse vistas.

Roads with Traffic Risks

The FIAAM highlights several key routes with potential traffic management concerns. The Formentor road is under access restrictions for the date, yet "there could be a considerable flow of vehicles attempting to reach walking points for eclipse viewing." Similarly, roads to Cap Salines, Valldemossa, Soller, and the Sineu road via Son Gual, s’Hostalot and Puntiró — where the sea is visible from all three — are flagged for possible congestion. Of special note, "the eclipse will coincide with sunset over the sea at these locations," offering a unique visual spectacle.

Coordination with Local Authorities

FIAAM has submitted its critical points map to local authorities, particularly the Consell's Highways Department and the Government’s Directorate General for Emergencies. In anticipation of heavy turnout, "some roads may need to be closed to prevent bottlenecks on the day of the eclipse," as acknowledged by the regional minister for the Presidency, Antònia Estarellas.

Organisational Response and Opportunities

Last Thursday, the region's Commission for Managing Total Solar Eclipse-Related Actions convened with representatives from the Government, island councils, the Federation of Local Authorities, the University of the Balearics, and astronomical groups. On another front, Costa Cruises has launched packages inviting enthusiasts to "experience the event from the Balearics sea," including an immersive on-board eclipse viewing with appropriate safety provisions.
