Starting January 1st 2026, connected V16 beacons will be mandatory for all vehicles registered in Spain, replacing the traditional emergency warning triangles. However, drivers from other countries who are visiting Spain temporarily will not be required to use a V16 beacon. They may continue to rely on their home country’s standard triangles, as the new rule only applies to Spanish-registered vehicles and respects international agreements on vehicle equipment.

Foreign residents in Spain, however, must comply with the new law. Anyone living in Spain with a vehicle registered locally will need to have a connected V16 beacon installed from the start of 2026.

Guidance for Foreign Drivers

  • Short-term visitors: Tourists and other temporary drivers can follow the rules of their home country, using their existing emergency triangles while driving in Spain.
  • Foreign vehicles registered in Spain: Residents who register their cars in Spain will be required to have a V16 beacon, as part of the country’s updated road safety regulations.

Why It Isn’t Compulsory for Everyone

The Spanish traffic authority (DGT) recognises the V16 as a replacement for triangles, but this obligation is limited to vehicles registered in Spain. International conventions, such as the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, and mutual recognition of vehicle certifications mean that foreign-registered vehicles can continue following their country’s rules. Temporary visitors cannot be forced to carry a V16 beacon while driving in Spain.

Tips for Driving Across Europe

  • Carry triangles when travelling abroad: The V16 is only legally recognised in Spain. Drivers heading to countries such as France, Portugal, or Italy will still need traditional triangles to comply with local laws.
  • Use the V16 as an extra safety tool: While the beacon can enhance safety on Spanish roads, it does not replace triangles when travelling in other countries. Carrying both devices ensures compliance and maximises protection for all road users.
