An increasing number of drivers on Spanish roads are zigzagging between lanes to overtake or progress more quickly, but this practice poses a significant danger that shouldn't be underestimated. The DGT (Spain's traffic authority) has again alerted drivers about the negative consequences of continuously changing lanes without clear justification, warning that this behaviour significantly increases the risk of accidents and creates greater confusion among those driving in an orderly and responsible manner.
The manoeuvre involves making frequent and abrupt lane changes, which can cause sudden braking, invasion of spaces that don't correspond to the driver, and in the worst cases, collisions. Additionally, this type of driving is often associated with an aggressive style that elevates levels of tension and stress on the road, hampering drivers' ability to react to any unforeseen circumstances.
Spain's General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has reminded drivers through its official X account (formerly known as Twitter) that zigzagging between lanes to try to overtake or save seconds is a serious infraction. This action carries a fixed financial penalty of 200€.
However, beyond the financial sanction, if this behaviour is interpreted as reckless driving—for example, if it involves invading the opposite lane or creating a manifest risk for other vehicles—the fine can rise to 500€ and result in the withdrawal of 6 points from the driving licence. These measures reflect a tightening in the control of these practices, seeking to reduce accidents and promote driving that's more respectful of the rules.
Recommendations for safer and more responsible driving
In light of this situation, the DGT recommends adopting certain measures to avoid falling into these dangerous behaviours. Among the main keys, they highlight anticipation in manoeuvres: planning lane changes in advance and making clear and timely signals so that other road users know one's intentions.
Likewise, always maintaining an adequate safety distance from the preceding vehicle is fundamental to avoiding unexpected braking and facilitating smooth traffic flow, thus preventing risky situations.
