Much is said about low-season tourism in Mallorca. I completely agree that this island is a fantastic place to visit in the winter, but don’t tell me, as you are preaching to the converted. Winter tourism is a complete joke at the moment, despite claims from the local authorities that it is a growing market. This is to keep the anti-tourism lobby at bay who allege that there too many tourists in the peak summer season and more should be done to promote the low season.
The reason why there are few tourists during the low season is that there are no flights. I think I am right in saying that at the moment there is just a single daily flight from Gatwick. London as we know is a long way from Mallorca’s key booking areas in Manchester and Scotland. Outside Palma there are only a handful of hotels open (I believe that in the Pollensa area there is not a single hotel is open). So if you can’t get here and you have nowhere to stay there are obviously going to be few tourists.
A British tour operator did attempt a winter programme but had to scrap it because they got little support locally. Yes, Mallorca can be a winter holiday destination but the industry needs to believe it and then they need to get working. A Happy New Year to all.
