While much of Spain and the southern Mediterranean is having to battle fatal forest fires and combat extreme temperatures, it has been brought to the travel industry’s attention that people are now choosing their holiday destinations based on new factors.

Price still remains king (value for money) but the weather is also being taken into account.
A recent study in the UK discovered that 63 percent of Britons are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact of climate change, extreme temperatures during the peak season summer months, and are therefore either opting for cooler climbs - Norway has posted a 50 percent rise in bookings this summer - or travelling out of season.

Now, the latter could be good news for the Balearics if seized upon and taken seriously.

More tourists in April and May and then September to November will clearly help to lengthen the season, keep hotels and resort businesses open, create more jobs and generate more income without the pressure of mass tourism.

Climate change cannot be ignored, to do so would be foolish, so perhaps out of all these tragic weather disasters something positive could hopefully emerge.
