Softly, softly, catchee tourist in Mallorca

I’m constantly being bombarded with “flash” offers of up to 50 percent off room rates in the Balearics

Time will tell, but this summer does not seem to be happening for Mallorca. | Photo: Gemma Andreu

After a July during which the Balearic tourist industry, all along the food chain and on all of the islands, had a jolly good whinge, there appears to have been a tactical change. Now, it could be because the politicians have all headed off on holiday and want to switch off or it could be a case of not wanting to face facts at the peak of the season.

Those who have made comments, such as the unions and the restaurants sector, have said this week that while business has picked up a bit, it’s still down on last year. While hoteliers have put their prices up and are busy, job creation is slightly down and wages have remained flat - so something and nothing.

The official line is that it is still too early to make a serious and grounded judgment on the season until all the numbers are in and have been crunched around the end of October - or later depending on how bad they are going to be.

And while my emergency alert warning on my mobile has yet to ping, I’m constantly being bombarded with “flash” offers of up to 50 percent off room rates in the Balearics and elsewhere in Spain for August and September from the main Spanish/Mallorcan hotel chains. And some leading foreign tour operators have extended the “child free” option to 12-year-olds. Time will tell but it could be a bit late by then.
